Things to do in provence

If you’re making the journey to Provence and are planning to make a holiday of it, there are a range of activities for everyone. From lavender fields and bustling markets, to long lunches and local wine, there is plenty to explore at your own pace.

Lavender Fields at terre ugo

A visit to Provence wouldn’t be complete without seeing the lavender in bloom.

Head to Terre Ugo, a beautiful lavender estate just outside Aix-en-Provence, for an especially magical evening.

During July and August, they host Lavender at Night every Friday from 7:00 PM–10:30 PM, with a gourmet picnic among the lavender, a starry Provençal sky and roasted marshmallows to finish the evening.

It’s the kind of summer evening we’d highly recommend lingering over.

Explore the Markets of Aix-en-Provence

One of the best ways to experience Aix is to wander through its markets. Pick up fresh fruit, local cheeses, flowers, textiles, antiques and, naturally, something delicious to eat.

Major Market Days - Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays

For the full Aix market experience, make your way through the different squares and streets:

  • Cours Mirabeau & Rue Thiers Browse textiles, clothing, hats and accessories.

  • Place des Prêcheurs & Place de Verdun A huge selection of regional food, fruit and vegetables, alongside arts, crafts and clothing.

  • Place des Combattants d’Afrique du Nord Head here for the flea market and antiques. You never know what you might find.

Wine Tasting at domaine clavel

For an afternoon among the vines, head to Domaine Clavel and discover the wines of Provence. Take a tasting, enjoy the beautiful surroundings, and settle into the slower pace of life that makes this part of France so special.

It’s a lovely way to spend an afternoon, particularly when paired with a long lunch and nowhere else you need to be.

A day trip to Aiguèze

If you fancy visiting a small French town, Aiguèze is well worth a visit. This gorgeous medieval village sits high above the Ardèche River, with winding cobbled streets, charming stone houses and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. If you’re feeling adventurous, head down to the river for a swim or take in the spectacular scenery along the Ardèche Gorge. If you need a restaurant recommendation, Le Bouchon is a favourite of ours! It’s the perfect spot for a slow, sun-soaked day soaking up the charm of the south of France.
